Natural Tears
Tears in human eyes are very important. The tears protect our eyes from infections. The tears play a important role in keeping our eyes healthy, shiny and bright. It does not mean we should start weeping and fill a bucket with tears. Let us know more about tears.
There are situations in life when our eyes get filled with tears. There can be tears in eyes for a number of reasons. We can get tears in eyes because of happiness, sadness, excitement etc. Sometimes when we fall short of words to express, tears become the language of expression.
Different kinds of tears:
1. Tears of happiness
2. Tears of sadness
3. Tears of ecstasy
4. Crocodile tears
5. Tears while cutting onions
Tears are related with our stress hormones. When we weep, the level of blood pressure, heart beats and energy increases. The feelings of jealousy and anger decrease when we weep. Though these changes are temporary and these changes disappear as we stop weeping. If we get tears in our eyes because of sadness, the level of stress hormone increases which causes irritation. But as we stop weeping, the level of hormone decreases and our body becomes normal.
Many hormonal changes occur in women’s body before or during pregnancy and periods. In fact, the imbalance in estrogen and progesterone hormones affects those chemicals which are connected with emotions. In this situation, the level of stress hormone “Cortisol ” increases and the level of oxytocin decreases. Oxytocin hormone relaxes our mood. The chemicals serotonin and endorphin found in mind are also affected.
If we weep too much, our memory is affected with the passage of time. Our immunity power also decreases. We cannot work with full concentration.

How tears are formed?

Tears are released from tear glands which are present in eyes. The mucous glands are present on the border of eyelids. These mucous glands cause the release of oil and mucous along with tears. The oil, mucous and tears form a layer on our eyes which prevent our eyes from dryness. The pH of tears is basic in nature and so tears taste sour.
Tears contain mucous, sodium, potassium, magnesium, Lysozyme, glucose and lipids. Tears glands are present on the border of outer side of eyes. When we blink our eyes, the tears spread in eyes and maintain the level of moistness in eyes. Eyes get cleaned by weeping. Tears cause the smoothness in eyes which in turn causes the eyeballs to move easily. Enzymes are found in tears which prevent eyes from bacteria.
If there are no tears in our eyes, the eyelids cannot move easily which will stop the safety of eyes. Then the dust cannot be removed from eyes. The eyes will become dry and there will be conjunctivitis due to bacterial infection.
Tears appear in eyes either because of any infection or because of any intense emotion. If we talk of tears because of infection, tears appear if we have severe cough. If we feel any disturbance in inhaling, tears appear in eyes. If the nose is closed and we inhale, the tears appear. Tears also appear if we have any infection or irritation in eyes or nose. Tears in eyes also appear because of any nervous disorder.
Why do we get tears when we cut onions?
When we cut an onion, its cells break and release Amino acid sulfoxides. Amino acid sulfoxides form sulfenic acids. Enzymes get mixed with the sulfenic acids to produce propanethiol S-oxide, a volatile sulfur compound that wafts upwards towards our eyes. This gas reacts with the water in tears to form sulfuric acid. The sulfuric acid burns, stimulating the eyes to release more tears to wash the irritant away.
Last but not the least
The Crocodile Tears: A crocodile sheds tears when the crocodile swallows its hunted food. They also have tear glands like humans. Their tear glands work the same way as humans’ tear glands work. We should not think that a crocodile repents when it swallows its hunted food. The example of crocodile tears was started in 16th century. We call a man shedding crocodile tears if he is trying to show the grief but he is not sad. We can see a comedian or a villain in a movie or story shedding “Crocodile Tears”. It is used to show humor by a comedian or cruelty by a villain.
So Weep and shed tears when you need to but no crocodile tears please.
